Meet Your Neighbors: Kim and Marissa Manlove, Crusaders Against Teen Drug Abuse

Kim and Marissa Manlove We first met Echo Point’s Kim and Marissa Manlove three years ago when we profiled them as our “Meet Your Neighbors” for April 2005. Kim and Marissa lost their teenage son, David, to inhaling or “huffing” at a friend’s house in June of 2001. To help deal with David’s loss and to enlighten other parents to the perils of drug abuse, the Manloves began their crusade, telling their story to as many teenagers and parents as would listen. I recently sat down with Kim and Marissa and asked them to give us an update on how they're working to prevent other parents from experiencing a similar tragedy. Since our ...

Finding Sunshine in a Gloomy Market

Marc Schrenker Before I discuss what I believe to be positive market signs, I want to take you back to a very uncertain time in our country and economy: September 2001. Even before 9-11 occurred, the markets were in a steep decline as the technology bubble had popped, pulling the entire market down. 9-11 caused a further slide, depressing values even more. I ‘ve gone back and calculated a few "what-ifs." If you had purchased $10,000 of Vanguard Index 500 Mutual fund on October 1, 2001, it would be worth $13,781 on June, 30 2008. Even if you'd purchased a very conservative mutual fund at one of the worst ...
